R U OK? Day (12 September)

A conversation that could change a life.

You never know what someone may be thinking or feeling. Are they thinking big or small thoughts, happy or sad thoughts?

This could be a work colleague, a friend, family, child, or someone who looks like they are struggling.

Let’s make the question “are you okay?” part of everyday conversation. You could be that person who changes a life.

How to ask:

  1. ASK: Think about when and where you are when you ask the question (e.g. somewhere private). You could ask in different ways. Are you okay? How are you traveling? I know it’s been a tough week, how are you feeling?
  2. LISTEN: Keep an open mind and don’t judge their experiences. Sitting in silence is okay and giving them time might be what they need.
  3. ENCOURAGE ACTION: Where are they at with their concern? Help them find the next step for what they could do. Help them seek professional advice.
  4. CHECK IN: Being there and letting them know someone cares.
