Children's Books That Celebrate Neurodiversity

Books hold so much power! We love using them therapeutically in the clinic, and they are a great tool for home as well. We have put together some of our favourite books available that celebrate the beauty in the diversity of our brains, and help us learn more about ourselves and others.

The Brain Forest by Sandhya Menon

Why we love this book: The Brain Forest celebrates the natural diversity in our neurotypes while introducing it in a way that is easy for children to understand. It features beautiful pictures to highlight this message. The author, Sandhya Menon, is an Autistic/ADHDer Psychologist herself!

All birds Have Anxiety by Kathy Hoopmann

Why we love this book: Who doesn’t love animals? So many of us can connect strongly to animals and see parts of ourselves in their behaviour. This book takes us on a journey to understand the brains of a bird and how this can be similar to those of us with anxiety. It can help normalise this experience and open up an important conversation.

Some Brains by Nelly Thomas

Why we love this book: Some brains takes a strength-based approach to help us understand that all of our brains are unique and why this is such a good thing. It is great to help all kids understand the natural differences between us.

Brilliant Minds by Shannon Meyerkort and Amy Blackwell

Why we love this book: This book celebrates 30 people diagnosed with dyslexia who went on to become heroes as they got older. Being diagnosed with dyslexia can seem a little scary at first, so this book helps kids see the power and potential they hold.

The World Needs Who You Were Meant to Be by Joanna Gaines

Why we love this book: This book is a simple but powerful ode to the uniqueness of individuals and the different ways we naturally interact with learning or those around us. It encourages children to have the confidence to be themselves.

This list is just the beginning! We have many other books we love on a range of topics – check out our clinician’s favourite books here.
